GEO label facets

The DMP 10 facets

The GEO label is a voluntary label used as part of GEO data branding to give visibility to the effort data providers put into making their processes conformant with the DMP. The GEO label is based on the 10 GEO data management principles, organized into 5 data management categories each associated with a colour: Discovery, Accessibility, Usability, Preservation and Curation. The use of coloured GEO label icons is a way to declare conformance to data management principles.

Dialogue series recordings

Dialogue series recordings present some practical examples on how the DMPs have been implemented by data providers

Presenting the label together in a single graphic

The GEO label is composed of a circular wheel graphic divided into 10 (36 degree) facets, one for each of the 10 data management principles. The background colour of each facet depends on the 5 data management categories. When a data provider is conform with the guidelines for an individual data management principle, they can apply colour to the facet of the wheel for the icon of that particular principle. If the data management principles is not conformed with, the facet remains white. The central hub of the circle part is always white and has the “GEOlabel” and “DMP” characters followed by the year and the level at which the data management principles have been applied.

Data providers who are making data resources available through GEOSS may brand their data with the GEO label to show that it is conform with GEO data management principles. Conformance can be declared at three levels :

Level 1: Self-assessment & declaration: Data providers declare which of the principles they are complying with and may use the GEOlabel to communicate conformance in their outreach materials. They may use the tag line “declared compliant with GEO data management principles”.

Level 2: Peer review and automated conformance testing: An automatic conformance test based on public criteria accesses both metadata and the data to assess conformance. Independent stakeholders (including users) in GEO community review the data against the data management principles, focussing in particular on aspects not assessed by automatic conformance testing. GEOSS GCI may publish the results of the conformance testing and also link to reviews. Data providers can refer to the results of the test and reviews in their outreach materials. They may use the tag line “reviewed/tested compliant with GEO data management principles”

Level 3: Certification: The provider agrees with the peer review and automated conformance testing results and requests certification. An independent certification entity undertakes an audit or quality control and validates conformity. GEOSS GCI may publish the results of the certification. Data providers can refer to the results of the certification and reviews in their outreach materials. They may use the tag line “Certified compliant with GEO data management principles” for data resources that are certified.

The label, criteria and application is an evolution of GEO data quality label proposed by the EU FP project GeoViQua and builds on the work of the GEO community on data sharing and data management principles.
